Engineering Can Really Pay Off

According to a recent CNNMoney.com article, “Which college grads snag the best salaries,” an engineering major can really pay off big time, even with the overall recession. It may make a difference where you graduate from, too: A report from PayScale.com showed that petroleum engineering majors and graduates of Harvey Mudd College are the ones raking in the cash.

"Our society values something practical -- that's why poetry isn't popping up on the top of the list," said Al Lee, director of quantitative analysis at PayScale. "As in the past, engineering and [similar] fields with a strong math component plus a physical world component remain on the top, with lots of money to be made in these fields."

Topping aerospace engineering and chemical engineering, petroleum engineers can earn a mid-level salary of $157,000.

So how much should money factor in when it comes to choosing a degree? Is your engineering degree paying off?
